Admittedly the character does not have a great need for magic either, runes are nice to have, but infusions work well for most things and equipment wise it doesn't change much in terms of gear quality, though it undoubtedly prevents a few nice pieces from being worn. You can still get enough from items, but with so many stats to prioritize more, it makes the antimagic shield less reliable to use. So it can't even spare Wil as a 4th pick stat, unlike several other martial characters which can. Brawler already gets great use out of Str, Dex, and Cun, as well as having some things keyed off Con. Another factor is that Brawler has more stat needs, and can ill afford to put any points in willpower. The anti-magic skills also represent another thing to spend Generic points on, which the class has so many good uses for already. But the damage reduction from striking stance already does that quite well. It also heavily helps protect against various stacked damage over time effects, and some high damage spells. In particular, one of the reasons to take antimagic is to prevent melee retaliation damage, which can be quite brutal when you have a lot of attacks. Second: Anti-magic or not? I take anti-magic quite often, but here I'm not so sure it was worth it.

Also, while I normally tend to take heavier armor when it's available, I've never really looked if being limited to merely heavy, rather than massive, makes it not worthwhile/less worthwhile in comparison to lighter armors as I can't recall any other class where massive vs heavy made a particular difference as with here where pugilism doesn't allow massive. Otoh, generic points are very strained on a brawler. But as I review, using heavy armor does require passing up Trained Reactions, which is a really great skill for mitigating near-fatal blows also the brawler has a few synergies with Defense which it does not with armor, which would thus favor light armor mastery. It seems weird that the pugilism tree allows heavy armor, but since that's how the game went with it so did I.

Just finished my game as a Brawler (thaloren), there were a couple major build choices which I'm quite unsure of, and wanted to know what others typically do.įirst: Heavy armor or light? I did heavy, since you get the free starting point in it, and heavier armors tend to be better.
